"I just dyed my hair black - I'll put another box color on it when I want to make it lighter again....right?"

I hear this quite often.
Here is the situation: Someone comes into the hair salon, who has dyed their hair at home - either dark brown or black. Seemed like a good idea at the time. They now have changed their mind; it is too dark - it looks too harsh - or maybe they just want to change it for the sake of change because they are bored. Should be easy - you do it the same way you did it before, right? Well...not really. Now you are in for some work. Why?
Well, let's start here: as a general rule in hair color and a standard saying in hairdresser talk goes: "color does not lift color." Easy for you to say, but what does it mean? Good question! Think of this visual: you have a black piece of construction paper and you want a light brown piece instead. So you take a light brown crayon and start coloring on the black construction paper. What do you see? Is it now light brown? No, you can hardly see the light brown crayon at all! The color of the black paper is too dark and dense to cause any light shift in color. Just because you are using a light brown crayon doesn't mean it is coloring and changing the black to light brown. It's the same way with hair color. It's pretty easy to make light hair darker, or put darker dimensional pieces in lighter hair. And, there is minimal damage with the hair coloring products you will use to do this. But lightening darker hair is much harder and more harsh on the hair. In order to lighten dark hair you will use  a de-colorizer - in one form or another and this puts stress on the hair. Also, consistent results are never guaranteed and often not achieved.
When I run into this situation, I approach it from a "work in progress" stance. Meaning, to go from darker to lighter - this will be a work in progress and take time over a series of months and visits. I once took a client from dark black to a gorgeous light, sandy brown, but it took a little over a year! She was patient and consistent and by the time we were through, she had a beautiful head of hair again. Anything worth having...well...you know....
So - before you decide you want that awesome jet black hair with the purple tips...think long and hard. Count and consider the costs and decide if it's really the right thing for you and your lifestyle. Of course you know, that black is the harshest color against the skin - shows every imperfection and you will be wearing make up everyday and everywhere you go in order to not look like a corpse. lol! And - when you want to change it - you are in for either a very short haircut, an expensive salon adventure, or a home lightening nightmare and then an expensive salon adventure! Black hair color can look very cool, but it's not for everyone and it has its drawbacks. Decide wisely. :)
'Till next time.....

Is OMBRE Hair Color On The Way Out?

Paying attention to the upcoming trends in hair color this fall - it seems that top color artists agree: the trend is "BYE BYE OMBRE hair color!"
One of my favorite hair color artists and experts - Beth Minardi says "It's time to spice things up for fall...Hot Copper, Amber against Chocolate and sexy Rouge-Red can all enhance various skin and eye tones."
The fabulous Kim Vo predicts "Molten Caramel - a deep golden caramel color with a kiss of amber will be a great way to update a client's hue for fall."
Belinda Keeley of Chumbac Concept Salon, Victoria, Australia predicts cool tones and precision blending in hair color.

So will we be seeing a decrease in the ever popular Ombre hair color trend this fall? I, for one hope so! It's time for change. Let's have fun! Lets experiment with warm - cool contrast hair color combinations on deeper hair color hues. Chocolate! Cafe Au Lait! Cinnamon! Aubergine! Essssspressso! I'm getting excited! Ready for a change? Let's DO IT! :)

Is a SHORT HAIRSTYLE easier to do?

"Is a short hairstyle easier to do?"  I get this question frequently, so I thought I'd take the time to address this question.

The answer..... Yes....and...No.
First, as with any haircut or hairstyle, styling ease depends on a few things;

your hair texture and density

your skill at styling your hair
the haircare products you use

Just because you have a short haircut, doesn't automatically mean that your hair life will now be a life of ease. If you have fine, straight hair, you know - the kind where you shampoo and condition your hair, shake it and go and it falls effortlessly into place - you can pretty much have any type of hairstyle that is suited to you with little or no hassles. If, on the other hand, you have hair like me - thick, coarse, wavy, frizzy hair - you are in for some work. I have had short haircuts, (as short as I dared to go) and found that they required much more time and work: blowdrying section by section, flat ironing section by section, etc. AND in nice cool weather, the hairstyle would stay, but as soon as I encountered a humid day - the afro appeared and it wasn't pretty! In order to make my short hairstyle work, I use top of the line salon haircare products for smoothing and straightening, as well as a smoothing shampoo and conditioner. It's amazing how much easier this makes my life. You simply cannot have coarse, frizzy hair, want a smooth, straight style - short or long - and expect it to look good without recommended professional products and styling time. IT WON'T WORK...EVER! :) I hear this in the salon..."It doesn't look like you did it." "I just can't get it to look the way you do at home."
The first thing I ask is: Are you using the professional products I'm recommending for you, which I used on your hair? Are you taking the time to learn how to style this new haircut I've given you? Usually the answer to one or both of those questions is NO!
"I don't have the time, I use Garnier or whatever my husband has in the shower!" Aggggggggggggghhhh!  Frustration sets in.
I am a hair professional, here to serve you and help you in your hair life any way I can.
I give you hair tips, styling advice and hair product recommendations for your good. But they won't do any good, unless you listen. So....consider the costs while you're debating a short hairstyle change. Weigh both the good and bad and then make an informed decision. Call me, we'll sit down and look at hairstyle pictures and talk. I have lots of great, creative hair ideas and I will help you figure out what's best for your hair - short or long - even if that means telling you no!
Love your hair - WE DO!

Hair Salon Product Review : KMS CALIFORNIA FREE SHAPE HOT FLEX - Hair Protectant Spray; Why We Can't Live Without It!

hair studio, flat iron, heat protect
Protect your hair from heat damage and thermal styling tools. Have your hair look the way it does when you leave your hair

Let me preface this by saying - I worked 6 years for a corporate hair chain and had daily access and free samples to almost every professional hair care product and brand  known to man. I also have experience with every hair texture you can think of; from baby fine to ethnic and coarse. I am picky. I have my favs. I'm not one specific brand-loyal. If it works; I carry it in my hair salon; if it doesn't, I don't. Simple as that.

Now...
on to the subject at hand! KMS  CALIFORNIA FREE SHAPE HOT FLEX.
Do you dream of a hair care product that you could easily apply to your hair, blow dry, and go - worry free until your next shampoo?  Do you want your hair to look at home, the way it does when you leave the hair salon? Look no further!

  • What it is: KMS FREE SHAPE HOT FLEX is a thermal protecting spray.
  • What it does: Protects your hair from heat producing tools.
    Cuts down drying time considerably.
Locks in hair style until the next shampoo.
Provides great texture to the hair.
    Smooths frizzy, unruly hair.
  • How to apply it:
After shampooing and conditioning (with your fav KMS shampoo/conditioner - I'm partial to them, they are awesome!), spray into towel dried hair and comb through. Give a rough blow dry. For more control and straighter style; spray section by section, after rough blow dry, and voila! Beautiful hair!

When using this spray on my hair salon clients with coarse, thick hair, and even my own hair, I found that my blow drying time was cut down by 1/3 and that I didn't need to apply any serum, as I usually do, to smooth out the hair. I noticed that my style lasted until my next blow dry, regardless of humidity.  In my opinion, using KMS HOT FLEX spray every other time you shampoo is optimal and gets best results.
